3 Tips to Prevent Summer Burn Out

By David Ito - Certified Life Coach, MSc. Public Health, Nutrition

July 30, 2023

Do you feel extra energized during the summer but notice you become increasingly ungrounded as the weeks go on? When we over do it, our lifeforce energy (prana) drains and we can fall out-of-balance. Here are 3 ways to boost and preserve your zen during this summer!

1

Life is Full of Choices

Let’s face it - we are creatures of habit. We test things out and then keep repeating the ones that work better - it’s called survival and it’s in our DNA. But what’s also in our DNA is our capacity to change and improve our quality of life.

When we open our minds to new options and decide to try them out, we not only prevent cognitive decline, but we actually enjoy life more fully.

This summer I urge you to ask yourself: “how can I surprise myself by enjoying other activities I possibly haven’t tried before?” See the boundless palette of opportunities in front of you and just say YES to trying new ones out!

2

Plan, Choose, Select

If you find yourself exhausted due to endless gatherings, celebrations, and events - in addition to your already busy work load - here are powerful mindfulness guidelines to help you plan your social interactions.

  • Ask yourself what your energy level is for that day. Be honest and only plan according to your energy’s stamina.

  • Are you mostly an introvert or extrovert? Most people have some of both but generally we lean towards one or the other. Knowing which one is more prevalent in your personality and being mindful about it will help you choose when it’s right to leave any given social interaction. The goal is to  end the day feeling fulfilled, not drained.

  • Be selective with who you’re spending time with and who you let in emotionally, physically, and spiritually into your life.

3

Develop Self-Care Practices

Would you believe me if I told you it takes just 30 minutes a day of self-care practice to bring you back to balance? With all of the fiery yang energy of the summer, our bodies crave the balancing yin as well. Some ideas to get you started on a sustainable daily practice:

  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Breathwork
  • Non-Sleep Deep Rest
  • Mindful Walking
  • Mindful Exercise

Commit to some sort of
self-care practice every day - mix it up - and  you will feel rejuvenated, peaceful, and more prepared for what lies ahead.
